Veneers

Dental veneers are thin ceramic or composite resin shells designed to cover impurities on the surface of the teeth. They are custom-made to look and feel like natural teeth and are an excellent option for those who have healthy but stained, cracked, crooked or otherwise misshapen teeth. Veneers can also fill in gaps between teeth and generally improve the overall image of your smile.

Ceramic Veneers

There are many advantages to ceramic veneers including the fact that they are durable, strong, and resistant to staining. They provide a smooth, translucent and very natural appearance to the tooth. Before the ceramic veneer is applied to the surface of the tooth, Dr. Chestnut removes a small amount of the existing enamel from the tooth next to the tooth receiving the veneer. Impressions of the surrounding teeth are also made so that the new veneer matches the shade of the neighboring teeth in order to blend in. Once the new veneers are matched and ready, they are placed on the teeth to be treated and any necessary adjustments are made before the veneers are bonded and secured to the treated tooth.

Resin Composite Veneers

The other type of veneer is made of resin, a composite material that also creates a natural-looking, smooth and effective cover for misshapen, chipped or severely discolored teeth. Unlike ceramic veneers, less of the enamel of the treated and surrounding teeth needs to be removed in preparation for the veneer. Before applying composite veneers, the treated tooth is cleaned and prepared. The composite material is then sculpted and bonded to the tooth using a special light that hardens and secures the veneer to the tooth. The veneer is then smoothed and polished to resemble a natural tooth.
