Cracked Tooth

Do you experience pain while chewing or drinking hot and cold liquids? Even a brief twinge of pain may be a sign you have a cracked or broken tooth. Cracked teeth can occur from seemly harmless things such as chewing on hard objects or foods like ice, popcorn kernels, or hard candy. Grinding or clenching your teeth, direct trauma or even restoration treatments such as putting in a large filling can cause a cracked tooth.

What is a Cracked Tooth?

A crack in a tooth is typically a hairline fracture that runs vertical down the tooth and is rarely ever visible to the untrained eye. X-rays can help highlight cracks and reveal the source of any pain. Pain occurs because cracks in the enamel (the hard, protective covering of the tooth) exposes the sensitive tissue inside the tooth, known as the pulp. Dental pulp is full of the nerves and blood vessels that help keep your teeth healthy. Exposed pulp is extremely sensitive to hot and cold temperatures.

Cracked Tooth Treatment

Treatment for cracked teeth range from repairing the tooth with a filling material that prevents further cracking and reinforces the tooth enamel. A root canal is another option for treatment when the pulp is affected or in severe cases when the tooth will no longer survive and needs to be removed (extracted). If the cracked tooth causes no pain, treatment is often not necessary, and your dentist may choose to just have you avoid aggravating it and plan on treatment only if it becomes bothersome.
